First Archery Deer!!!!

It finally happened!  Seven years after buying my Mathews Legacy bow I finally harvested a deer with the setup.  The funny thing is I almost didn’t go out today since it was pretty warm and kind of misty out.  Then I thought to myself that since it was the last day of archery season I should head out so that I could have a chance of having one of those “it was the last day of the season…” stories.

I got out to Nanette and Roy’s place a little after 1pm.  Nanette and I sat around and shot the bull for a while. Then, once Roy arrived, we all suited up and headed into the woods.  Roy’s plan was that he and Nanette would mosey through the woods and take a shot at what they may see.  I was going to sit tight and see if they pushed anything my way.

About 3:45pm I heard something over my shoulder.  I turned around and saw two does heading out of the thick cover and onto a small cut line where I was waiting.  The deer walked to with in about 15 yards and I  let my arrow fly.  The doe stumbled and took off back to where she had come out of the thick stuff.  I saw her crash into the thicket and that was the last thing I heard.  I knew it was a good shot and just sat down to wait a while.  About 5 minutes later Roy came out of the trees and we went looking for the deer.  We found the arrow and it confirmed that it was a good shot.  We followed the blood trail about 30-40 yards and this beauty was laid exactly where I saw her crash into the thicket.  My first archery deer!!!  Now the work begins.  I field dressed her while Roy went back to get the ATV to pull her out.

Below is a crappy cell phone pic.  I didn’t take a good camera on purpose because anytime I have a good camera with me I don’t see a thing.  I’m sure glad I decided to go out today.  Thanks Nanette and Roy.  I couldn’t have done it with out your help and generosity.
